Violence

There is plenty of super-powered brawling between the heroes before they join forces. The villain blasts and stabs various persons with his magical staff; there is a little blood. It is implied that he cuts out a person’s eye, though this happens off-screen. The end of the film is one long, protracted battle between superheroes and alien forces, with many alien soldiers killed and human civilians imperiled.

Sexual Content

It is implied that a man and a woman are cohabitating; she wears short shorts in one scene. Various superheroes wear form-fitting clothing. There are a few kisses, but nothing scandalous. The Hulk wakes up naked after morphing back into his human alter-ego, but we only see his bare chest, back, and thighs.

Language

A few mild profanities, but all-in-all The Avengers have surprisingly clean mouths.

Story

When a treacherous demigod (Tom Hiddleston) joins with alien forces to conquer Earth, the head of a new government agency (Samuel L. Jackson) unites superheroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johanssen), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) to save humanity from slavery and destruction.

Pros and Cons

Action-packed, moving, and frequently hilarious, The Avengers is an all-cylinders crowd-pleaser. Writer/director Joss Whedon juggles his larger-than-life characters with panache, giving them all room to grow and develop while not skimping on spectacle and fun. The performances are terrific and the chemistry between the cast, whether they’re bickering or working together, is wonderful. All in all, it’s one of the best superhero films ever.

Discussion Points

Strength comes from overcoming selfishness and pride to achieve unity. The greatest form of altruism and love is to be willing to die for others. Use of force may be justified to defend the innocent from tyranny and oppression.
