From bouquets of sharpened pencils to the smell of Scotch tape, Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox (played expertly by Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks) fit together in the same kind of quirky combination. The movie is set right at the cusp of the online social media era of dial-up email and chat rooms. Kelly and Fox innocently meet in one such room and carry on anonymous conversations for months without ever knowing who the other is. They are, in fact, direct competion for one another in the NYC book industry. Kathleen's world revolves around her children's book store which was opened by her deceased mother, "The Shop Around the Corner" and Joe's business is the big, bad discount chain retail store, "Fox Books" that just moved in and is taking over. The cast is endearing with many familar faces and the storyline is just like Kathleen Kelly's mother is described . . . charming. In my opinion this is the BEST of the Nora Ephron and Meg Ryan films - a must-see!!!
