Studio Summary
Cupid isiarmed andidangerous!
This delightfully fun and lighthearted comedy is based on the story that inspired the hit movie Clueless! Dazzling Gwyneth Paltrow shines as Emma--a mischievous young beauty who sets up her single friends. Funny thing is...she's not very good at it! So when Emma tries to find a man for Harriet, she makes a hilariously tangled mess of everyone's lives. You'll enjoy all the comic confusion...until Emma herself falls in love, finally freeing everyone from her outrageously misguided attempts at matchmaking!

This version of Emma is one of my very favorite. It is fairly similar to the book, but is more colorful and vibrant than some of the other versions I've seen. I love this movie!

I saw this movie ages ago with my mom and sister, when I was a teenager. It was my introduction into classic, romantic period pieces (a.k.a. Chick Flicks). It is about a woman who attempts to play matchmaker with little success (drama ensues). I actually enjoyed the movie, even though I maybe had a little crush on Gwyneth Paltrow at the time. After watching this, I was able to move on to other classic period pieces and enjoy them as a guy (although I recommend subtitles). This movie has aged very well over the last 16 years, as it was well crafted and based on a timeless story. Even though the characters speak in the same dialogue as classic English literature, the director was able to give the characters life, and all characters are surprisingly very human (instead of cardboard caricatures of people from that period).

This is my favorite adaptation of Emma. It is even quick moving and humorous enough that my husband will watch it with me, which is nothing short of a miracle considering it is Jane Austen. Gwyneth Paltrow is adorable as Emma and this movie may have the most hilarious Miss Bates ever. I would recommend this even if you are not a Jane Austen fan. A very fun movie. |
