"One Of The Best Pictures Of The Year!" -Los Angeles Times
Nominated for 5 Academy Awards® including Best Picture, Best Actress (Juliette Binoche - The English Patient) and Best Supporting Actress (Judi Dench - Shakespeare In Love), Chocolat is the beautiful and captivating comedy from the acclaimed director of The Cider House Rules! Nobody could have imagined the impact that the striking Vianne (Binoche) would make when she arrived in a tranquil, old-fashioned French town. In her very unusual chocolate shop, Vianne begins to create mouth-watering confections that almost magically inspire the straitlaced villagers to abandon themselves to temptation and happiness! But it is not until another stranger, the handsome Roux (Johnny Depp - Sleepy Hollow), arrives in town that Vianne is finally able to recognize her own desires!

Juliette Binoche is Vianne, the chocolatier that shows up in a small French town one day with her daughter Anouk. They've been wanderers before this, and here they are to start over again. As Vianne opens her chocolate shop, she tries to awaken the villagers to the pleasures around them. Unfortunately, the mayor and comte of the town resists and tries to turn people against her and her shop. Then comes Johnny Depp as the wandering gypsy. OK, really who doesn't like Johnny Depp?
The movie strays in some parts, but the idea of loving life and not hiding behind an authority figure (who is repressed himself) is a good one. My only caution would be that the movie, while clean, celebrates more the physical pleasures of life. I was more moved by the woman who pulled her life together than I was by the idea of enjoyment without reason. How many times, though, do we examine who we are, what we are doing, and why? Make sure you have some chocolate on hand, though, because you'll be running to the cupboard for it halfway through.
